NHS Scotland Case Study

At the National Health Service in Scotland, I applied user-centred design principles to improve public health services and address health inequalities

  • Led user research and prototyping initiatives to improve access to cervical screening, focusing on minority groups

  • Prototyped a design solution to address cervical screening health inequalities in West Lothian

  • Navigated a large and complex organisation to gain access to key stakeholders and healthcare professionals

Challenge

  • About 30% of the Scottish population do not attend screening appointments

  • Statistics show that there is a high correlation between deprivation and non-attendance

  • The reasons behind this are multifaceted and complex

  • By understanding the barriers to attending better, we can focus resources and personalise services to facilitate participation

  • In collaboration with the NSS Service Design Hub and Health and social care partnerships we set out to answer: “How might we use personalised communications to increase the uptake of cervical screening in West Lothian?
